Fornix
The fornix arises from neurons in the subiculum and the hippocampus (two components of the hippocampal complex) and
is the largest single input to the hypothalamus. As the fornix approaches the anterior commissure, it
divides into a small precommissural bundle, derived largely from
the hippocampus, and a large postcommissural bundle, arising
mainly from the subiculum. The precommissural bundle passes
to septal and preoptic nuclei and to the anterior hypothalamic
region, whereas the postcommissural bundle projects primarily to the medial mammillary nucleus, with lesser inputs to the
anterior thalamic nucleus and lateral hypothalamus.
