The Stratum Lucidum (Clear Cell Layer)
Stratum lucidum is a hyaline, refractile band between the stratum granulosum
and the stratum corneum. It consists of several layers of closely packed flattened cells
that appear homogeneous. Nuclei are no longer recognizable, and the cytoplasm is
filled with semifluid keratohyalin and tonofibrils arranged parallel to the surface of
the skin. The stratum lucidum is only present in the thick skin of the palms and soles.
