The Stratum Granulosum (Granular Cell Layer)
Stratum granulosum consists of two to five layers of flattened cells. Their principal distinguishing feature is the presence within the cytoplasm of keratohyalin
granules, which stain intensely with basic dyes. These granules contribute to the
process of keratinization. In the stratum granulosum, epithelial cells begin to die,
and the intercellular space is sealed by the lipid-rich secretory product of the cells,
forming the epidermal permeability barrier.
